Rivers swollen by beavy rains and melting snows flooded to'W'ns and villages over wide areas of Eastern f,rance' and• Westem Germany yescei^ day, smashing bridges and clo'sing roads and railways. The situation in the Saar is described as grave. The Government established rescne services. The Saarbrucken and Saarloitis are isolated. The Saar River is the highest for 150 years. Four Alsatian towns can be reached only by boat. Parts of Nancy and Strasbourg are under water. The rivers Moselle and Meurthe flooded thousands of homes. The floods washed away ten bridges over the lipjper Rhine. American troops evacuatea iouu German _ f amilies from Glenhausen on the Kinz'ig River. Three to six inches bf snow fell yesterday in Lincolnshire ahd acrost, Scotland. Blizzards are reported iri some districts with snow blocking the roads. Southern, central and eastern England had crisp sunshine and cold breezes with temperatures at some points down to near freezing point. Continuing cold is forecast with'snowfalls in many parts of Britain and keen froSts.
