Comments by prominent Kepublic.ans on President Truman's statement, are regarded as an indication of the linc the party will follow on domestic policy lu next year's general election campaign. The chairman of the ILouse Banking Comuiittee, Mr. Jess Wolcoti (Michigan), who with Benalor Kobert Taft (Ohio) sponsored the Bill, saiu: "If the cost of living is not brouglit down, the l'ault will be that of the President and not Congress. The Bill contains part of the President s own programme and is all he .needs to start b is programme. liow the President vises the powers given him will guide us in determiniiig whether furtlier powers will be granted him." The Democrats, on the other liand, mobilised quickly in support of President Truman. They described the Bill as "pitifully inadequate" and "an idle gesture." Kcpresentative Brent Spruce (Kentucky), who is a metnber of thc Banking Committec, said: "It is unfair to him and to the Ameriean people to hand him a Bill of that kind because it gives him no real power to carry out the purposes stated in the ! Bill's title. "
