NEW YORK STRUGGLING OUT OF BLANKET OF SNOW

New-Y'or'k faced the most colossal task in its history, said the Aiayor, Mr. O'Dvvyer, when referring in a oroadcast to the situation by the record snowfall. He added that it could not oe accomplished by the city government alone but lequired the cooperation of evcry resident. Tlie city was beginning to wrench , itself loose from the shackles today but tlie real test of freeing itself is expected witli the start of the business week and with thousands of Christmas visits out of town. Considerable progress has been made. The main arteries for the most part have been eleared. i-iubways and railroads itrd iiearing horuuil operations and 90 flights were made out of La" Guardia field yesterday. However, little progress has been made in clearihg the secondary roads ana side streets. Thousands of stalleu motor trucks aitd motor cars have not been budged from where, tike stricken things, they were rendered immoveable bv the snow. A force of nearly 20,000 men, with the aid of 2344 dump trucks, ploughs and Other equipment, yesterday i assatled banks aiul piles of snow.
