Awapuni Races Popular Perhaps the largest crowd to leave Shannon over the holidays was on Boxing Day, when all means of transport out of the town to the Awapuni racecourse were well patronised by local racegoers. Many who are not normally followers of the "sport of kings" took advantage of the bright sunny day to entertain their visitors at a day at the races. Gift Parcels Arrive A few months ago the children in the lower classes at the local school 1 sent -gift parcels to pupils of the Thames Detton School, in Surrey, England. Miss A. Clayton who, organised the gesture, has now received an acknowledgment ' of the parcels received, together with a beautifully illustrated book entitled 1 "Englan-d Today in Pictures" from the Thames Detton children, for the Shannon School. Speedway Successes With the opening of the Palmerston North speedway season last week, many local enthusiasts were present. Tlife tWo "FoXt'd'n ridfers vttio ■ seem to be very popular with local I fans are Messrs T. O'Leary and W. Byne. Both these riders performed I well. In the event for stripped stock machines (4 laps handicap) (O'Leary won his heat from Byne ahd also won the final. In a similar scratch race O'Leary was placed first and Byne second. The winner's j time was 1.34 2-5. ! A Good Christmas Although Shannon's Christmas did not , seem to be as active as in past years, all business people report a good turnover. On Christmas Eve the town was quite busy in the late afternoon and early evening, but the crowd thinned out shortly after 9 p.m. The buses to Palmerston North attracted many of the i younger folk who like to enjoy the crowds of the city. The absence of children was very noticeable and it was probably due to the fact that the children were left at home that parents vacated the town at such an early hour.
