YES, WE HAVE NO BANANAS!
Levin householders have no grounds for compiaining about the price of bananas, whicn Palmerston North residents claim are being sold by some greengrocers at as high a figure as 1/- a pound. This parti'cular financial worry is nonexistent in Levin, for there .are no bananas offering at any price. . . iu has long been the complaint of local greengrocers that Levin, in xeeping witn ■ many other small towns, is not .receivmg a fair quota from the distributing centre, Palmerston 'North. . The meagre ratibn that is claimed to be. handed but to local retailers does not allow for this luxury fruit to see the light of qay, except to special customers. . To those plannmg. fruit saiads for New Year's Day a measure of cofntort will be conveyed in the- news that with effect from today the Government has issued a new Price Order for bananas.. Published in the New Zealand Gazette on Decembers 19, Price Order No. 824 states that the maximum retail price of bananas within the metropoliran areas of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin wiil be at a rate of 7£d a pound. Elsewhere the rate will be at 8d a pound. A reduction of fourpence a pound on the price charged in some shops immediately prior to Christmas represents a considerable " amount. Now it remains to be seen whether any bananas will be available.
