Red Cross Meeting The Levin Red Cross Society's final meeting ' of the year was held recently, the president, Mrs. Blake, occupying the chair. After the usual business had been dealt with members arranged to visit the Palmerston North Hospital on Thursday next to distribute gifts to the patients. Afternoon tea wasserved and the season's greetings interchanged. New Factory for Levin? The firm of R. Hannah and Co., Ltd., has advised the Levin Borough Council that its director will visit Levin as soon as possible in order to go ihto the matter of" establishing a small factory here.* Another firm, the Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Co., Ltd., advised that they could find no suitable building in Levin and were forced to look elsewhere. Thev had secured premises in Dannevirke. Import Licences Consideration will be given to applications by yddnufacturers of women's outer garments for licences to import ' from British sterling sources reas'Onabie quantities of fashion belts for use as accessories on articles manufactured by them, states a memorandum from the Customs Departmeht. Applications for licences to import electric fence chargers also will be considered. Escape from Burhing House When Mr. J. Snodwell, an elderly drover, was awakened by an object falling from the mantelshelf in an uncompleted three-roomed house at Wangaehit he fouhd the building was enveloped in flames. He awoke none too early, for by the time he reached safety the back had been burnt .from the shirt he was wearing. . Mr. Snodwell himself was unhurt, but the house was razed.
Tram CatcheS Fire Passengers hastily left a tram that caught fire in Cuba Street, Wellington, at 9.30 o'clock last night. Apparently - caused by a short circuit in the' motor, the fire caused little damage. The out-' bi-eak was speediiy extinguished by engines of the Wellington Central Fire Station, and the tram was removed to a ioop in Lower Cuba Street to await a breakdown tram to tow it to the sheds. The fire '.occurred as the tram, approaching the city, neared the Ghuznee Street intersection. Rotary's Final Meeting The Levin Rotary Ciub closed its activities yesterday for the holiday recess. The guest speaker at the weekly luncheon was Rev. A. Salmond, M.A., whc, in a topical talk, told of the significance of the Christmas festival and traced the manner of its ob'Servance in different countries over the years. He was' accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Before the meeting concluded the president, Mr. D. P. Todd, extended seasonal greetings to members and thanked them for the enthusiastic manner in which they had worked during the year to make the club's operations successful. The club will resume its weekly luncheon meetings on Febriiary 2. . Beauty of Forest Marred "I was literally shocked by the change since I was last over the road," said the touring manager of the Automobile Association (Auckland) , Mr. R.. E. Champtaloup, in a report on a visit to Waipoua ForeSt presented at a meeting of the council Of the association. He said the portion of the forest north of the "Big Tree," formerly a , very. attractive drive, was marred by two roadside quarries, whose bleak ugliness detracted from the* beauty of the surrounding bush. In addition, a portion of the roadside had been churned bareand denudedof forest growth, apparently by logging trac- > tors. There was .a close resembf lahce to the recent Unsigh^y scars I in the Mamaku Hills bush. on the ' J Rotorua highway.
