CHRISTMAS IN THE AIR IN BRITAIN
Received Tuesday, 10.15 a.m. LONDON, Dec. 15. Christmas is in the air at Covent Garden with the arrival of Jaffa oranges and grapefruit. Christmas trees are selling at 30d a foot and holly from 6d to 9d a bunch. The police are out nightly using searchlights on cars, hunting for turkey thieves. They set traps on all the main roads, stopped motorists and checked their i'dentity cards and petrol coupons during the weekend. The Food Ministry said that 1974 tons of turkeys had arrived from , Australia. The Food Minister, Mr. John Strachey, is considering the Federation of Meat Trade's plea to en'd price control on home- produced poultry to beat blackmarketeers. The federation says that the removal of controls would ensure that the public and not the blackmarket got food, though the trade's j price would be higher than the controlled price.
