CARPENTRY TRAINEES
POSSIBLE TRANSFER LOCALLY Speaking at a meeting of the Shannon Borough Council last week, Cr. V. J. Bateman, chairman of the industries and building committee, stated that, acco'mpanied by Cr. L. G. Sayer, he had visited the Rehabilitation Department in connection with the possibilty of jhaving carpentry trainees under the rehabilitation scheme transferred to Shannon to complete their courses. Cr. Bateman advised that he had contacted Mr. Ferry of the department, who appeared very interested in the suggestioii and said that he, personally, could see no objection to the Shannon trainees completing their courses in this town. Mr. Ferry went on to state that there might even be a possibility of a class . of fourteen spending eight moiiths of their course in Shannon.' Cr. Bateman gave the assurance" that if this was possible the council would do everything in its power to arrange single men's accommodation for them. There has bben another suggestion that the men would travel to Shannon from Palmerston North daily. Cr. Bateman also stated that he and Cr. Sayer had interviewed members of the Housing Departmen,t to discuss the possibility of buil'ding more State houses in this town. He was advised that there were already six units to be tendered for, .and the tenders were now being called. If sufficient applications are received for State houses in Shannon, there is a possibility that more contracts will be drawn up. The department will give every assistance to rehabilita-tion-trained men who wish to contract for the erection of State house units.
