MOROTAI WINS BIG OTAKI RACE
SEA FURY AND YANDRA WERE BRILUANT IN SPRINT DIVISIONS i ____ The Otaki Racing Clnb 's summer meeting- was held on Saturday in fine weather and there was a satisfactory attendanee. Tliere were few scratchings during the day and three races were run in divisions. The course was fast and the totalisator investments amounted to £61,386, compared wth £65,469£ last year, the decrease being £4083^.
Rothnic Paid a Price. Rothnic, trained by J. J. Waller, at Awapuni, was moved up to be in close attendanee on the leaders half a niiie from home in the higliweight and he was with Gyration ahead of Royal •Moutoa, whieh liad made most of the pace, Beueve aud Silver Mascot into the straight. M. Andrews tinied his run to the inoment and Rothnic- won by two lenglhs from Gyration four lengihs in front of ltoyal Moutoa. Roekanui Jinished well for iourth followed by Beneve, liomespun and Nancy Boswells. Devongue'and Oban. Bevongne was iirst out in the lirst division of the Muiden Raee and slie won well, but by less than a length from Shenandoah a nose in front of Super Lake, with Trafalgar I)ay, Conceal, Royal Reserve, My l'al and Marabou next. Oban was lirst out in the seeond division, but Myfox led into the sti ...ght followed by Oban, Slv Gold, Sunshine Bay, Nullah and Travelon. Oban soon hacl charge and he won by three lengtbs from Sly Gold two lengths in front of Sunshine Bay. Next were Nullah and Vale Rosa. Eed Herring ancl Deep Sea. The Waituhu Ilack was run in divisions and the winners, Red Ilerring aud Deep Sea never left it in doubt. In the lirst division, Red Ilerring was siow awav and after follouing Deckon, Veiue d'Or, Faithl'ul l'al, aiul Afton Water into the straight he linished on the outer and won attraetivelv by a head from Faitliful Pal half a length in front of Beckoji aud Royal Cambria whieh dead-heated for third. In tlie seeond division, Deep Sea led into the straight t'roiu Beau Reve, -J i n ny Jinks, Lord Vietor, and Dady Barriugton. Deep Sea tlien won easily by half a length i'rom Beau Reve two lenglhs in l'ront of Lady Barrington. Grev Pluiue was next. Morotai 's Great Effort. Morotui won the Raukawa llandieap after being in front all the way aud s.he stuek on gaiuely over the last furlong to meet the brilliaut cliallenge from linperial. llalf way down the straight it looked as if linperial would wiu, but when Clutterbuek asked Morotai for her iinal ell'orl, slie respouded gallantly and was more than holding her owjl over the last bit. Next home were King's Ransoni, Broieiield, Merry Robin, Areo, Iron Duke, The Stormovik, Lowry Bay and Yasda. Saravan Showecl Real Class. Vitessi led tlie two-yoar-ohl liehl into t the straight and Gold Lap, Saravan, ir-j resistible and Goldeii Robes were next. • In the run hoine, Saravan did best and she won by a length from 1 rresistible a head in front of Golden Robes. Next home were Vitessi, Flying C'olours, Gold Pal aml Jkirrvvorth. Torrent Beat Eastern Rose. Torreul and Eastern Rose from Awapuni fought out the iiuish of the ilack seven and Torrent gol the deeision by a neck. Brantford, iirst to leave tlie mark, was with Eastern Rose ahead of Torrent, Royal Baron and Master /Larry at the home tuni, and he linislied well for third three lengths away from the • seeond liorse. Sir Denzil was fourth followed by Royal Baron, Niglit Royal and Kelmont. Sea Fury and Vandra. The Huia llandieap was run in divisions and the wiiiner of the iirst was Sea Eury from Castlebrae, and tliut of the seeond Yandra from Lady Burford. In the iirst division, Tlieoeritus led into the straight t'roui Ladyship, Castlebrae, Carmelita and Theio Liglit. in a gruiui linish, Sea Eury, oii the outer, got up to beat Castlebrae by a head with Ladyship only a head further away. Carmelita was fourth and Tlieoeritus and Persuade were next. In the seeond division, Deprive led into the straight attended by Craven, Tahli aud Lady Burford, and Yaudra, brilliaut on the outer, beat Lady Burford by a nose. Craven w as oulv a head away just in front of Orakau. Next were Treasure Tee and Tahli. Bon Chale Surprised. Bon Chale was lirst home in tlie coucluding race and his wTin dividend was posted at over a third of a eentury. 'Patunui was half -i head away seeond and Tenor Royal and Conimereial were next. After the raee there was au iuquiry into a charge that there had been interferenee by the winner witli tlie seeond liorse and the pay-out was held up. Later it was announeed that tlie protest had been dismissed. Tlie payout was held up for some considerable tirue. Hunch, Jolly goodfeliow, Gyuoeeium, Angell and Bon Chale was the order at the iive, but Bon Chale, Patunui, Commercial and Jolly Goodfeliow were in the picture at the home turn from whicli mark Bon Chale and Patunui fought out the linish.
