OTAKI ATHLETES' SUCCESSES
Des. Smith, the fifteen-year-old Otaki cyclist, was successful at Petone on Saturday in winning the handsome Laykold Cup. Stai'ting from the 200 yard mark he lilade steady headway, and' covered the1 five miles in 13 mins. 41 secs. His sprinting was a feature of the race and his win was acclaimed with applause. Smith has been riding well at the weekly meetings at ; Otaki, and his success was not altogether unexpected. "Chum" Blomfield also rode well | and was second in his heat of thei mile. C. Wilton and Ted Mathie 1 fmished first and second in their heat of the half-mile, while/Mathie ! was third in the final. Riaers did ; well to "be so prominent, as There j were competitcrs from distant ' parts as well as from the Welling-' ton district. G. Clunie, who was aj competitor in a'thletic events, ran well to gain first in the 220 yardS: open handicap.
