SIMILAR DEMAND MADE IN CHRISTCHURCH
CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 10. Lf a deiuaud presented to the employers this week is not answered by 5 p.ni. tomoryq.w, 50.,,\vorkm,s in threh , laige bakeries turning out the biggest proportipn of the bread supply in Christchurch, will strike On Moudav. No connuent was a\ailable todav from either the secretary of the Baking Tradcs Union, hlr. M. C. Gillard, or tlie secretary of the ^laster Bakers' Association, Mr. G. R. Burrowes. Ii was learned unoffieially, however, that ■ a vote at'Stacey and llawkers, the iargest lnikery in the city, and at C. E. Boons, Ltd., was overwhelminglv in favour of a strike. The workers at G. Mouev and Sons have siguilied willingness to support those in the other two establishments eoncerned. It is underwood that 70 per cent of those who votecl favour a strike. Tlie chief complaint appears to be the workers are getting in only 34 hours weekly instead or 40. Thc Factories Act gives them a 40-hour week but not a five-day week whieh is what they seek.
