FRANKEST PERSON IN MOVIES
One of the most honest, intelligent and independent of Hollywood personalities is Dorothy McGuire — who went there five years ago to star in "Claudia," and was such a success that "Claudia" threatened to become her whole career. Dorothy is at present working for Fox in "Gentleman's Agreement," in which she plays Kathy. She likes the role because the story is modern and human. "I wanted so much to get away from 'Claudia' that I went for things like Katie Nolan in 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn' and the ugly Laura in 'The Enchanted Cottage,' " said Dorothy recently. "I enjoyed both but actually the best break I have had so far was the mute girl in 'Spiral Staircase.' I didn't even have my choice about that one — Selznick signed me up for it while I was in Europe on an USO tour." She does not think she ivould ever want to do a costume role— but, in her own words, "Maybe I had better not say that. I am liable to find myself in hoop skirts before I know it." Dorothy is just as Frank about her private life. She says she is happy with her husband, John Swope, after almost five years of married life. "That is a very good test, don?t you think?" queried Dorothy. The Swopes have a new home on the Hudson River in New York. Between pictures Dorothy
flies from Hollywood to New York, where she is now remodelling and furnishing that new home. , Swope, a publisher, is wealthy, and Dorothy could retire to become a playgirl. I predict that she is much too interested in her work, . and much too spunky, to give up her Lndependence. •
