DR. CAMPBELL'S NEW POST AT MASSEY COLLEGE
The Chair of Dairy Ilusbandry recentlv establishecl by Massey Agrieultural" College was filled, at a meeting of the Board of Governors vesterday, i>v the apointment of Dr. lan L. Campbell, B.Agr.Hc. N.Z.J, Fh.D. (Missoviri) , who for eight years has been in cliarge of the dairy hu.sbaiulry section of ihe New Zealand Dairy Eeseareh lnstitute at the College. Applications for the position were called for in Britain and other paris oi the Empire. Professor W. Eiddet, who is Proffessor of Dairving at the College, and also Director of the Dairy Eeseareh lnstitute, will continue to be in general eharge of the dairy departnient, which empraces both dairy liusbandry and d ai ry manuf ac tures. Dr. Campbell, who is 32 years of age, graduated at JMassey College and was hiimediately apointed to his present pdsition at a time when the dairy liusbandry seetion was a small oue. Duringj those earlier years of establisliment and expansion, he milked night and morning in the slied, at first by liand and later with unachines, and carried out organisfttional, lalioratory and office work duriiig the day. Ife left in 1939 for study in animal researeh at the University at Missouri, the dairy department of which is noted for its researeh work in milk sfecretion; and in 1942 was awarded a Pli.D. in dairy husbandry. Many Ameriean universities and researcli institutions were visited by Dr. Campbell before he returned tq his work with the New Zealand Dairy Eeseareh lnstitute. Over the last tive

Besides his academie attainments Dr. Campbell has had several years of praetical farming experience, in addition to the management of the lnstitute 's researcli farm. He has been responsible for many seientific papers, and was one of the joint authors of the book, "Principles of Animal Production". Ile is a member of the executive of the New Zealand Society of Animal Production and of tlie Dairy Science AsSoeia tioh. . In sporting cireles Dr. Campbell wih be remember as a Manawata represent ative footballer and cricketer, and a tennis player of no mean order. He commenced his secondary school educa tioh at Wellington College and latet was' prominent in sports at Seots College, of which institution he was dux in 1931.
