SKI-ING AT 60 M.P.H.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 4. At. 1.26 p.m. on Wednesday a young man stood poised on skis on the sonthern rim of Egmont's crater (1260 feet) and 45 seconds later he was at Rangitoto Flat, threequarters of a mile below. Franz Skardarasy had realised his dreamand had skiied down the steepest slope of Egmont in straight riuming. His perfonnance was made possible hy the use of a cape resembling wings and this, stretched across his back and attached to his wrists and ankles, acted as a brake to reduce his speed. The cape was entirely successfid but even so the speed of 60 miles an hour thrilled the single onlooker and Franz himself commented that it was "very fast". Skardarasy had mkde three visits to Egmont ih search of suitable weather and snow conditions to make the run down the 200u-foot slope.
