MINISTER APPRECIATES NEED FOR FARM LABOUR
WELLINGTON, Dec. 5. There was a fuli appreciation o.t the importance of en.uing an adequate labour force for primary production, stated the Minister of Immigration, Mr. McLagan, replying to a request by Federated Farmers that the Gove,,nmer.!: should immediately iinplement any practical schemes for immigration of suitable farm labour and domestic labour for rural areas. While he appreciated that there was at present some shortage of labour for farms and dairy factories, the Minister continued, it seemed from the information available to his department that 7he shortage was not so acute as that in other esscnnal industries for which workers were beiihg recruited. in Britain under the assisted immigration Echeme. " The Minister said he proposed to ask the Immigration Advisory Council, at its next meeting, to consider whether, aaving regard to the overall labour josition, provision should be made for recruiting farm workers under the immigration scheme. "Your council," he added, "may rest assurel »that any recommendation that' thc Immigration Advisory Council may wish to make will be given mori favourable consideration."
