Beneficial Rain j The rain which has fallen in j the past few days has had a very ' beneficial effect on- parched garj dens and pastures. Since the j drought broke on Saturday 90 I points of rain have fallen, advises | Mr. H. Harvey, of Cambridge Street, more than was recorded for the whole of the preceding days of the month, The total rainfall during -November was 1.1 inches, as compared with 3.42 inches in the same month of last year. Tne highest temperature during the month was recorded last Saturday, when the mercury touched 86 degrees. Levin the Leader | A splendid National Savings effort was recorded bv the Palrperston North postal district last week when a total of £8909 was raised. Levin was a clear-cut leader with the flne total of £4616. Palmers-" ton North subscribed £2144 and Feilding contributed £1390. All places were' again successful m recording a weekly quota success, the list of towns being as follow's: — Palmerston North, Apiti, Ashhurst, Bulls, Dannevirke, Feilding, Foxton, Glen Oroua, Halcombe, Kimbolton, Levin, Manakau, Ohau, Pahiatua, Pongaroa, Rangiotu, Rangiwahia, Rongotea, Sanson, Shannon, Tokomaru, Weber, Weraroa and Woodville. Paralysis Precautions All possible precautions are being taken in Levin to prevent infantile paralysis. The Levin Borough Council has refused entrance to the swimming baths of children u~der 16 years, while the management of the picture theatre has prohibited the entrance of children un'der 12 years. All organisations in the district are postponing meetings where children would normally congregate. Taking full advantage of their enforced holiday, ' 'children from the schools and colleges are Seeking outdoor pleasures and parties of two and three were to be seen this morning, preparing for shprt tours on their bicycles and tramping expeditions. Fewer Road Deaths "Ten people lost their lives In traffic accidents last month," said the Commissioner of Transport, Mr. G. L. Laurenson, in a state--ment to the Press. "This shows a marked reduction as compared with the fourteen killed during November of 1946." Three of those killed were passengers in motorvehicles, three were pedestrians, two were drivers of motor-vehicles, one was a motor-cyclist, and one a push-cyclist. "With the approach : of the holiday season, tens of thousands of New Zealanders will be on the roads," said Mr. Laurenson. "With this vast increase ln . traffic volumes, the dangers of the roa'd wiU be gre'atly multiplied and I would make an urgent appeal ' to everyone for more care." '
