CLEANING OF STREAM

PROGRESS WITH WORK AT RANGIURU Tlie dragline which is cleaning the Rangiuru Stream is doing very satsfactory work. Making a start just at the lower side of the • road bridge, on the eastein bank, it is proceeding through the properties' of Messrs. C. Fox and Ryder Bros. The depth of the stream is being increased by the removal of a large quantity of mud, and the cut will straighten the flow of water. This work, in conjunction with what is being done by the big dragline in the Otaki River, will dfeable the extra water caused by heavy rain and melting snow on the ranges to flow quickly away. This will prevent much of the damage by flood that has so often taken place in the past. The success of the operation is so satisfactory that the question of a larger stop-bank and flood gates is receiving serious attention. Should this scheme be successfully carried out, much of the land that is now in swamp can be brought into cultivation. It is hoped that arrangements can be made for the dragline to continue the cleaning of the stream on the upper side of the road bridge, which would be of much advantage to many properties on Tasman Road.
