LOCAL BODY POLLS TOMORROW
CONTESTS IN WHICH HOROWHENUA RESIDENTS WILL VOTE
f \ The triennial local body elections take place throughout New Zealand tomorrow* aaid polling booths everywhere will be open from 9 a.m. to. 7 p.m.. for voting. » The elector indicates his choice by placing an X in ihe square provided beside the hame of the candidate for whom it is desired to vote. Any person whose name is on a local body roll may vote in that local body's elections. A person not on the local body roll but desirous of voting may do so by deelaration, provided his or her name is shown on the parliamentary general roll as a resident of the particular local body's territory. The elections are not confined to ratepayers,. any resident being able to vote. It is to be hoped that the apathy shown by electors to campaign meetings will not continue tomorrow, and that heavy voting will eventuate in ah polls.
Below are set out the various elections which will be- held' throughout the Horowhenua district. LEVIN BOROUGH In the Levin Borough the main contest is the mayoralty, the candidates being Messrs. H. B. Burdekin and A. W. Parton. Electors will also vote in the Wellington Harbour Board election. •Polling booths will be at the Bandrbopi, Bath Street, Levin, and St. Mary's Hall, Manchester Street, Levin,
HOROWHENUA COUNTY Major interest in the Horowhenua County elections will centre in the council contest, where there is an excess of candidates in all ridings. They are as follows: — Tokomaru Riding: Messrs. J. D. Aitchison, G. R. Barnes, J. H. P. Liggins and W. G. Lovelock. Two required. Whirokino Riding: Messrs. A. M. Colquhoun, D. K. Guy, J. B. Grey and E. R. Winkler. Three required. Otaki Riding: Messrs. A. M. Atkins, G A. Martin and W. G. Taylor. Two required. Te Horo Riding: Messrs. E. A. Antcliff, L. F. Brown, V. J. Cottle, A. Daniel and R. W. Jenkins. Two required. Electors will be called on to vote for one member to represent the Horowhenua County and part of Hutt County on the Manawatu Catchment Board, for which three .nominations have been received. They are Messrs. J. D. Aitchison, J. A. Kilsby and T. M. I. Ryder. ,Four candidates have beeri nominated for the two vacancies as representatives of the county on the Horowhenua Electric Power Board, and electors will vote on this issue The candidates are Messrs. J. B. Grey, J. H. P. Liggins, W. G. Taylor and T. G. Vincent. Electors will also vote in the Wellington Harbour Board contest. Polling booths will be at the following places throughout the county: Tennis Pavilion, Waikanae Beach; Church Hall, Waikanae; Post Office, Reikorangi; Public Hall, Te Horo; Tooby's Garage, Otaki Railway; Public Hall, Mana,kau; Public Hall, Ohau; Century Hall, Levin; Public Hall, Ihakara; Public Hall, Koputaroa; St. Andrew's Hall, Waitarere; Public Hall, Poroutawhao; Laurvig's Hall, Shannon; Social Hall, Mangaore; Public School, Tokomaru; and Public School, Opiki. OTAKI BOROUGH In the Otaki Borough the chief election is for the council, eight
nominations. having been received >-for the six vacancies. The candidates are Messrs. K. S. Ames, ND. Anderson, E. T. Bartosn, E. J. , Gook, H, W. Hakaraia, H. Jackson,, G. McKinley and J. L. Retter. Otaki electors- will also have a. yote in the Wellington Harbour' , Board election. The polling booth is to be in the' Maori College schoolroom, Te Rauparaha Street, Otaki. SHANNON BOROUGH Eleetors of the Shannon Borough will yote for the mayoraltv and council. The candidates
are:— Mayoralty: Messrs. D. 'A. Fitzgerald and R. R. Lind. Council: Messrs. H. 'Aitchison, V. J. Rateman, B. Clayton, C. M. Cronquest, R. - S. Downes, W. C. Higgie, Roy Hook, H. L. Norris, J.. J. Raper, S. N. P. Pedersen, L. G. Sayer and C. G. Wishart. Eight required. They will also have a vote in the Wellington Harbour Board election. The polling booth will be at the Borough Chambers, Plimmer Terrace, Shannon. BUCKLEY DRAINAGE BOARD For the Buckley Sub-division of the Buckley Drainage Board four nominations have been received .for the two vacancies as trustees, and a poll is to be taken in the Municipal Buildings, Plimmer Terrace, Shannon. The candidates, are Messrs. F. A. Denton, I. G. Easton, V/. C. Higgie and J. Mason. No election is necessary in the Paika and Koputaroa Subdivisions. 1 WELLINGTON HARBOUR BOARD: Electors in the Horowhenua County and . Levin, Shannon and „ Otaki Boroughs will vote two representatives of a large district, of which these local bodies are a j part, on the Wellington Harbour Board. Four candidates have been nominated for the two vacancies. They are Messrs. J. J. D. Capstick, W. L. Fitzherbert, A. Humphreys and B. E. Keiller. MAKERUA DRAINAGE BOARD i j Seven trustees are required for [ the Makerua Drainage Board and j as 11 nominations have been ' received a poll will be taken at the ; Municipal Buildings, Plimmer TerI race, Shannon. ! The candidates are: Messrs J. D. Aitchison, G. E. Alwright, G. V. Burkhart, S. H. Claridge, I. Croad, N. B. Gibbons, A. Gillespie, A. E. : Olsen, G. H. Smith, W. H. Southee ; and W. M. Williams.
