MISS MARCHING GIRL QUEST

HONOURS TO WANGANUI Seldom has such a large crowd refnaine'd. quiet for so long a period as'when the 4udging commenced for the Miss Marching Girl Contest at the Levin Park Domain on Saturday afternoon,, the occasion being the grand gala opening of the marching season ii>' th.e Horowhenua. Honours went to Miss N. Rermie of the D.I.C. team (Wanganui) and that the judges had made a wise choice was evident from the applause whioh greeted the announcement, the members of the other teams on the oval cheering lustily. The two judges Miss Wellington (Phyllis Stewart) and Miss Wanganui (Miss Melville) who had noted the teams during the course of their displays during the afternoon made firstly a selection of one or more from each team. The teams were lined up in single formation and judging commenced to secure the finalists, This, proved no easy task and quite a little, time elapse'd before the selection was completed. The teams did not know until th.e finalists were announced by Mr. A. L. Dobson, secretary of the association. In the order of judging they are as follows: — Misses B. Huston (Alpine), S. Smith and J. Jack , (Caledonian) , J. Perigo (K.B.H-), R. Tehiwi (Capstan), A.

uaneson (.rjroaaway) , jn. Beacn and H. Oardner (Premier) , N- Sell (Shannon Juniors), L. Millard (Macduffs) , "G. Sparrow and N. Dickie (Debonairs), N. Rennie and M. Bennison *(D-I.C.) The finalists were line'd up in team formation and the twojudges spoke to each girl, asking them various questions. Finally the girls had to march at tenpace intervals by themselves, which was perhaps the greatest test of Sil as - apart from the judges' eyes being upon them, over a thousahd other people's were trained upon them %so. On the complehon of the " march thefinalists reformedQ team formation. Miss Stewart' in the course of her rehiarks said: "We have had a very difficult job judging this contest. The main points we studied were physical fitness, the figure, and the way they answered to the questions we aske'd them. We have both come to the same conclusion and I think you will also agree with us that the pres-entatio-n of the sash for Miss Marching Girl, 1947, goes to Miss N. Rennie of the D.I.C. marching team, Wanganui. Miss Stewart then ca-lled upon Mrs. R. L. Murray to present the white satin sash bearing the inscription "Miss Marching Girl, 1947" to Miss Rennie, Mrs. Murray congratulating the recipient upon her win. The two judges also congratulated Miss Rennie and invited her to be photographed with them, which proved quite a long business as cameras . appeared from everywhere.
