MINISTER'S FUNERAL COST £925

WipLLIXGTOL, JNov. 11. Aiotal vote of £6,766,109 is provided for in the supplementary estimates which were presented in the House oi Representatives today. This amount is made up of a vote of £4,335,357 for tlie ordinary revenue account of the Consolidated Lund, one of £1,889,810 for separate aceounts, and one of £540,942 for accounts outside the public account. Most classes contain a supplementary vote for the payment Of increases arising out of the Arbitration Court pronouncement and the iargest individual item is one of £1,150,000 in the vote xor the Department.of Internal Affairs tor the payment of additional contributions to the three State superannuation funus. In the vote for the Department oi External Aft'airs, there is an item of £1262 representing New Zealand 's share of the expenses of the South Pacilie conferenee held at Canberra in January and February. Australia and New Zealand shared the expenses of this conferenee which was held for the purpose ot establishing a regional commission in the South Paciiic. The vote for the Economic Stabilisation Gonunission contains an item o± £146,000 to recopp the railways workmg losses up to the date of the iiiereased freights and fares. This is in addition to £500,000 provided on the main estimates. There is also an item of £350,000 for the subsidy on niarine freights due up to the date of the increased sea freights becoming operative, this being in addition to^ £600,000 voted 011 the mam estimates. To meet increased subsidies on butter and town milk j,t the recently anhounced increased p rites paid to dairy farmers, there is an item of £150,000 which is in addition to £2,045,000 provided on the main estimates. The expenses of the Aid to Britain campaign are responsible for £20,000 in the vote for the Department of Internal Affairs. A 'eompassiouate grant 01 £1250 is made to the widow of the iate Ilon. J. O'Brien and oue of £500 to the widow of the late Mr. A. S. Kichards, M.P. There is an item of £925 to eover the cost of tlie funeral of the late Mr. O 'Brien. A grant of £250,000 is made to the International Children 's Emergency Fuiul and a contribution of £12,500 towards its appeal which is being undertaken by the New Zealand" Council of tlie Organisations for Kelief Service Overseas. An additional . vote of £20,000 is grauted to the Otago Centennial Asso ciation. There is an item of £5000 to provicu assistanee to approved organisations to wards tlie eonstruction of menioriais commemorating World War II. The Marine Department vote con tains an item for an additional £10,601 for working expenses for the barque
Pamir. This is required to meet the cust of radio equipment (£300) and the annual overhaui and laying up period (£10,300). In the vote for the Department oi Labour and Lmpioyment there is aii item of £40,000 for the reconversion oi the hospital ship Atlantis which was made available by the British Ministry of Transport for the carriage of immigrants. r The vote for the Department of Agriculture contains an item of £2000 for the control and destruction of the realegged earth mite. It is stated that the mite prqsents a serious problem in the Wairoa and Matawhero areas and that experiments in control and destruction are essential. In the vote for the Department o± Scientiiic and Industrial Besearch there is an item of £3330. to cover the cost of the liire of the New Golden Hind tor the conveyance of a party on two oecasions while carrying out geologicai, botanical and soil exploration of tne West Coast sounds. There is also a grant of £500 towards the cost of an expedition to The Snares Islands soutn of New Zealand, to study bird,. animai and marine life on the islands. There is an item of £20,340 in the vote for the Department of Industries and Commerce for the pureliase of a quantity of jute cornsacks from India. An additional £200,000 is voted for the procurement of cement and fertiliser bags but it is reeoverable. An additional £210,000 is voted in the estimates of the Department of Health by way of subsidies to Hospital Boards. This suni, which is to meet extra costs arising out of tlie Arbitration Court 's pronouncemeut, is in addition to the £3,250,000 in hospital subsidies voted on the main estimates. The vote in the public worlcs account. for public buildings includes £500, 00U for the purchase of property in London for the High Cominissioner 's office. An additional £386,000 is voted for eonstruction, reconstructiou and iniprovements to main highways. The vote for the social security fund contains an item of £120,000, for public hospital fees (£70,000) and private hospital fees (£50,000). The main esti' mates provided for £230,000 for public hospital fees and £200,000 for privalc hospital fees and the additional £120,000 on tlie supplementary estimates is required to meet increased fees for maternity eases.
