FASCINATION OF CAMPING

OUTING AT mSSION CAMP Camp life has a fascmation for all, but chiefly for the young, and it was therefore no wonder that many of the younger folk recently enjoyed an outing. at the Mission camp at Otaki A jumble of bags, blankets and 28 young people under the leader- j ship of Mr. A. B. Malyon caught j the train on Friday evening and j arriving in Otaki about 8 p.m., i walked out to the camp. Hot sup■per was ready when members j arrived, for a few from the club j had gone up earlier by car. Huts j were allotted, mattresses issued, j and after making themselves j acquainted with the general lay- > ouh-of the camp, the campers made; their beds and retired for the j night. j The next morning at 6, some of the more intrepid were up, to 'enjoy the early morning sunshine! and to carry out their various dut- ! ies, such as lighting boilers and ■ preparing br.eakfast. Cooking was j done on a large range, which, when • stoked properly, provided excel- j ient meals, witli the help of a few{ cooks. Wood had to be collected! and the campers set to work after j breakfast. ! The afternoon of Saturday was! free, and many were tramping up or down the river, while others ( went in to Otaki to visit the ! Maori church. The evening was occupied with organised games ! under the supervision of the camp : Commandant, Mr. Malyon. Supper . and Compline finished the even- . 'ing and members went off to bed.- j Compline was said each night, : and at 6.45 on Sunday morning, j Communion was celebrated in -the j Recreation Hut, which was approfpriately furnished for the service. Canon H. E. K. Fry, from Otaki, ofhciated. , After breakfast on Sunday a few! decided to go swimming, while the rest went tramping, or stayed at the camp sunbathing. The afternoon was occupied with tidying and cleaning up, after which some of the more energetic enjoyed a! game o'f baseball. Wlien an early { tea was over, club members walked. in to Otaki to catch the train. The ' train arrived in Wellington about ( 8.30 p.m. and the club members; were soon home aird hoping to be able to go again.
