POTATOES TO BE RATIONED IN BRITAIN TODAY

Received Sunday, 8.30 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 9. Potato rationing will be instituted ia Britain on Monday. Adults will get three !bs. weekly, children under flve 1-|-- lbs., and expectant mothers 4^ lbs. Catering establishments and eahteens "will be rationed on a similar scale with additional allowances for Industrial and school eanteens. School feeding centres will be allowed 'eight ounces a child for each main meal. The Pood Minister (Mr. Strachey) said potato rationing will apply in England, Scotland and Wales, but not in Northern Ireland. Persons between the ages of fivc and 18 years will receive as long as rationing lasts one additional bread unit weekly. Industrial eanteens will get twelve ounces of potatoes per head for each meal and normal catering establishments three and three-sevenths of an ounce per person per main meal. Mr. Strachey said that as a result of the very dry summer the potato yield of 6.4 tons per acre was the lowest since 1931. The Minister also announced that the chocolate and sweet ration would be reduced from Janilary 4 from four to three ounces weekly. The total allocations of sugar for manufacturing purposes would be reduced by 25 per cent.
