OBITUARY

MR. THOMAS SMITH The death occurred at the Palmerston North Hospital on Wednes'day night of Mr. Thomas Smith, a well-known and very highly respected resident of Otaki. He had been a resident of Otaki for some six years, and made many > •friends by his quiet and unassuming manner," while as a bowler he was held in high esteem by his fellow members. Mr. Smith enjoyed good health till some weeks ago, when he became indisposed. A month ago he was removed to the Palmerston North Hospital for further medical attention, but he failed to recover and his passing came as a shock to his many friends. Mr. Smith. who was 76 years of age, was born in England and came to New Zealand as a youth of 18, landing at Wellington. He later visited various parts of the South Island, finally r.eturning to Wellington and accepting a position as tally clerk on the wharf. Later he was a warder at the Mental Hospital at Porirua and was also secretary of the Wellington Working Men's Club, where he rendered faithful service. On his retirement he was elected a life member.

Mr. Smith has two sisters in England, but no relatives in New Zealand, his wife having predeceased him prior to his arrival in Otaki. The funeral will take place on Saturday morning, foliowing a service at All Saints' Church at 11.30 o'clock.
