TWELVE ROAD DEATHS IN OCTOBER
WELLINGTON, Xov. 5. ' ' Twelve people were killod in traffic aceidents during Uctober, " said thc Commissioner of Transport (Mr. G. L. Laurenson; in a statement to the Press. ''The t'atalities resulted from a wide variety of eatises, illustrating again the dangers whieh beset all types of road users. Seven of those killed were d rivers or ueeupants of niotor veliicles, wliile the i emaiinler comprised three pede.st rians, a '-ycl i-st and a motor eycle pillion iidi*!. Two deaths t'ollowed collisions i.etween motor veliicles and three people wero killed wl.en their cars left the road or overturned. A car passenger was killed when the vehicle Rtrnek a telegrafdi pole and onee again a level crossing smash claiined a victim. ' ' Despit e inereased traffic on the road, there were fewer fatalities tlian in Oetober 19-1(5, when 14 lives were lost," said the Commissioner. ' ' Xevertheless there are still only too many instances of eareless driving, failure to keep to the left. speeding and reckless overtaking. Pedest rians, too, will continue to pay the penalty unle.ss thev exereise the greatest eai'e before step ping into the trallie ways. "
