Received 1'hurs-day, 11.20 a.m. MONTREAL, Nov. 5. "At least one auempt nas been made on the life oi M. Ivor Gouzenko, former Soviet Embassy cipher clerk, who exposed the Communist fii'th column in Canada," says the Montreal Herald's Ottawa correspondent, Mr. Harold Dingliam. • He added: "Tne Royai Canadian mounted police will not back up , tnis statement publicly, because the * Soviet Embassy in Ottawa is again involved. Because of the inciaent M. Gouzenko's hideout was changed immediately. "Tne auempt was badly conceived, and ended in a stupid incident in a Toronto police station. It happened months ago — the case is in both the Royal Canadian mounted police and Toronto police flies — when a Russian who proved that he was an employee of the Soviet's Ottawa Embassy was arrested in a drunken brawl. He had a gun in a shoulder holster and 650 dollars in his pockets. The police at the time did not annotmce any link with M. Gouzenko. "In a cell the Russian set up a howl for diplomatic protection. The police searched him and found papers attaching him to the Embassy. They telephoned Ottawa and next morning properly accredited ofneials of the Soviet picked up the prisoner and took him straight back to the Ottawa Embassy. No person has ever seen him again, either inside or outside the Embassy. "At the time of the incident M. Gouzenko was living in the Toronto area. Because of this, and presumably because of information obtained from the arrested man, there was a strong suspicion that he was on a mission to eliminate M. Gouzenko."
