Judges Choose Miss Mary Wootton (Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. Amidst a great storm of applause-, the title of Miss New Zealand was conferred tonight upon the 2l-year-old Mary' Wootton, Oan'terbury, in the Wellington Town Hall. The announcement, which was awaited almost breathlesslj' by the audience that filled the hall was 'made by" Miss Iris '• . Crooke, M.B.E., Honorary Direct- , .- or-Gcneral of the Red Cross V.A.'s on behalf of the panel of four judges. Three girls had been chosen for the final selection, said Miss Crooke. They were Miss Auckland (Miss Miraka Eaharuhi), Miss Canterbury and Miss Wes'tland (Miss Betty Mowat). Born in Christchurch on August 11, 1926, Miss Wootton was edu.cated at the Shirley School and the Christchurch Girls' High School. She is a receptionist in a doetor's rooms, and. also teaches eloeution. She took the leading part in the Canterbury Repertory Society 's production of the play, ' ' Widowers ' Houses", recently. Miss Wootton. said that her main sports were riding and swimming. As a result of the quest £13,000 has been raised towrards food for Britain and more money is yet 'to eome in.
