GRATIFYING MEMBERSHIP

SWIMMING CLUR REVIEWS YEAR'S ACTIVITIES * It was pleasing to note the presept membership of the club, said the retiring president, Mr. N. D. Tilley in his report to the annuai meeting of the Levin Amateur Swimming and Lifesaving Club last night. The membership now totalled 72, made up of 23 seniors, 12 intermediates and 37 juniors, The disappointing factor of this Was the very small number of Intermediate members. "We have a cofiege with an approximate total of 300 pupils, the majority of whom must fall within the intermediate age group, and who should help. :fprm the club's strongest group," he said. Another disappointing factor was that numerous children used the olub's. fqciiities to learn to swim 'and did not carry on with the club in iater years. At the period in their lives when they were between boyhood and manhoo'd and girlhood and womanhood, many of these girls and boys were inelined to look on swimming as a child's spqrt, whereas if they were to only put more into their swimming training they would ftnd a vast improvement in their health, which would fit them fully for physical 9fforts in later life, -continued Mr. Tifiey. It was to be hoped that every member who had used the olub's facilities woul'd renew his or

her membership, while residing in the town. The learners' class, which was conducted under the supervision of Mr. J. H. George, with the assistance of senior club members, had been well attended and the results should be viewed with extreme satisfaction, he said. Members -met with some success at the carnivals held during February and March at Woodville, Dannevirke, Feilding, Hokowhitu, Red Cross, Terrace End and the Centre championships at Feilding.

In concluding, Mr. Tilley expressed deep appreciation to the Levin Borough Council for maintaining the baths in first class order throughout the season, and for the sympathetio consideration it had shown towards the club's activities. The financial statement showed a profit on the year's working of £19 19s 7d, the credit balance amounting to £58 Is 6d. He woul'd like to congratulate those responsible for the compilation of the report and balance sheet, said Mr. H. F. McClune. The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin said he would like to join with Mr. McClune in offering his congratulations to the officers who produced the report and balance sheet. Election of Officers It was not his intention to seek office in the club for the coming seqson, said Mr. Tilley, but he asgured members that his "assistance and advice would always be at the club's disposal. He thanked

all officials for the assistance they ha'd given him during his term of office. , The election of officers resulted as foliows: — Patron: Mr. C. S. Keedwell; president: Mr. D. P. Todd; vice-presidents : "Messrs. H. j A. Phillips, W. G. Clark, H. B. Burdekin, H. F. McClune, J. E. Glover, H. J. Jones, H. Denton, H. A. Robertson and J. Irving, Mrs. W. G. Phillips, Miss C. Frechtling and Dr. E. T. G. Miller ; secretarytreasurer: Miss J. Clough; club captain: Mr. J. Murphy; vicecaptain: Miss N. -Fletcher; handicapper: Mr. R. Denton; committee: Messrs. T. Finch, A. Fletcher, W. G. Phillips, H Batten, J. Hayfield and Misses J. Phillips and A. Denton; deiegates to the Manawatu Centre: Messrs. J. Murphy and R. Denton. Mr. Todd thanked the club for electing him to the position of president and paid { tribute to the work of his pre'decessor, Mr. Tilley. General Business The question of reiay teiaffis was raised by Mr. Deenton. This was the only tioe a member reaiiy swam

for his club, he said. Mr. Denton suggested that a team should be chosen and an endeavour made to bring the Levin Cup back to its home town, "where it belongs." This was forwarded to the committee as a recommendation. Mr. Tilley str.essed the fact that ail members should have their times correct for entries in carnivai events. The onus for this would fall on the club, and any member e^ceeding his or her time by more than five per cent. was liable to disqualification. It was decided to approach the Levin School , Committee and ask for permission to use the school baths on Saturday mofnings to teaoh a learners' class. It was explained that the Coronation Baths were too deep for the satisfactory result-s requiredSubscriptions were decided upon as foliows: — Men 7s 6s, women 5s, intermediate 3s 6d, an'd junior 2s 6d. Intermediate and junior subscriptions will be reduceable by Is if paid before January 31, 1948*. It was suggested by Mr. Denton that more water polo 'activities should be held in an endeavour to increase the membership of the club. This was carried as'a recomr mendation to the committee.
