Na Mayoralty Candidates No nominations have been received for the mayoralty at Winton (Southland), where the present Mayor (Mp\ N. Metzger) has advised that he will not seek reelection. The Levin Mqsic Club will hold its final evening tonight in the Presbyterian Hall; with a programme of pianoforte solos and duets, vocal solos, items by the choir and elocutionary items by Miss Lois Lin'd. A collection is to be taken to assist the food for Britain campaign. Bowlers to Save Petrol At a meeting of the committee of the Hokowhitu Bowling Club on Monday it was decided to cancel all inter-club visits because of the need to conserve petrol. If an'd when the petrol position eases a new itinerary will be drawn up and an endeavour made to overtake any of the present cancellations. The club desires particularly to apologise to the Levin Central Club^ as they were to' have been visited this coming weekend. Capital Punishment In the House of Representatives, Mr. G. H. Mackley (Wairarapa) gave not-ioa to. ask the Prime Minister whether, ~in- view of the disturbing natvire . hf- • serious crime that is being committed throughout the Dominion, the Government would introduce legislation this session providing for the reinstatement of capital and corporal punishment and, if so, will it permit a non-party vote on the question as far as Government members are concemed? Chateau Tongariro An i'ndication that the Chateau at Tongariro, closed to the public since 1942, would be open again by next Easter, was given yesterday by the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts. Restoration work was proceeding rapidly, states the department. It should be oompleted before the end of March. A feature of the work was the installation of a new water supply. Up tiil now the water had come from a mountain stream. Frequently deposits of volcanic ash and pumice were brought with it, resulting in the corroding of the chateau's plumbing system. This would be obviated with the new water supply from a spring at Joe's Creek. Health Stamp Campaign With the first month' of the National Health Stamp Campaign eompleted,,. the Palmerston North postal district has reached almost 100 per cent. of its quota with £2012 (quota £2047). Palmerston North city has exceeded its quota by 8s 6d, while other country centres to surpass their quotas are Kimbolton . and Shannon, leading with approximately 7s per hea'd of population, Dannevirke with 5.s. 5d, Levin 4s 4d, Pongaroa 4s ld, Feilding and Sanson .4?, Weraroa 3s ll|d,' Weber 3s 10-|d, and Bulls 3s vlOd. Woodville is close in the run-^ ning with £99 of a quota of £112) 1 ; 10s. Though the Palmerston ! North postal district has acfiieved I over 99 per cent. of its quota, the I majority of the other district cen1 tres not mentioned have reached ' only the 50 per cent. mark.
