Mr. D. G. Leng-Ward, of Palmerston North, was a visitor to Shannon over the weekend for the closing of the Buckley Golf Club's season. Mrs. V. A. Wright and her two children, of Otahuhu, Auckland, arrived by air last week to spend two weeks' holiday with, her mother, Mrs. C. Bedersen, Vogel Street. The many friends of Mrs. R. Tippler, Senr., will regret to learn that she suffered a painful accident at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. Spencer, on Sunday evening. Mrs. Tippler slipped and fractured her leg. After receiving medical attention she was taken to the Palmerston North Hospital. Card Party Winners Owing to other attractions being held in Shannon last. Friday, the usual card tournament conducted by the local branch of the Labour Party was not held. Prize-winners at 'the previous week's tournament were Mrs, D, McLaggan and Mr. A. McLaggan. Summer Sport Popular With excellent weather prevailing over the weekend, all branehes of summer sport were well patronised. Both Saturday afternoon and' Sunday saw a large gathering on the local tennis courts and the bowling green and croquet lawns were wefl attended. The surrounding beaches proved very popular with those who prefer to spend their leisure hours at the seaside.
Successful Saie of Work The ladies of the Methodist Guild held a very successful sale of work on Friday at Laurvigs' Hall. There was' a continuous throng passing through the hall all afternoon, and the various stalls were well patronised. When the sale was cdmpleted there was hardly an ^rticle left unsold. The church will benefit considerably as the result of the ladies' fine effort. Extension of Fire Station The Shannon Borough Council recently made application to the Railways Department for the lease of a small portion of land for the purpose "of extending the fire station to- accommodate the new fire engine. The town clerk (MrV J. T. Bovis) advised that his council has granted approval from the district engineer for the granting of the lease. It is expected that the work of extending the station 1 will; : be commenced very shortl'y, ' Catchment Board Election As the present representative on the Manawatu Catchment Board (Mr. R. R. Lind) is not seeking reelection for that office, advice has t been received by the town clerk i (Mr. J, T. Bovis) that Mr. G, L. Ewen, being the only person nominated, has been duly declared elected to the board as representative of the combined boroughs of Feilding, Foxton, Shannon, Otaki; and Levin. Mr. Ewen is one of the Government nominees on the board at the present time by virtue of his late office in the Lands Department, and which he will automatically relinquish.
