N.Z. BUTTER BY TON IN SHANGHAI— WHY?
; DUNEDIN, Nov. 3. "One can buy New Zealand. butter almost by the ton a4id without coupons in the markets of Shanghai," said Mr. R. E. Hayward, who has just returned to Dunedin from China after serving with the fishing rehahilitation administration of Unrra. "I saw it for myself in three separate places in Shanghai," he added. Mr. Hayward said that he and an Austraiian friend were shopping in the Shanghai market one day when they came upon two huge pyramids of butrer, one of Austraiian butter and the other of New Zealand. Both were astonished to see their country's butter being sold unrestrictedly in China while their own people were being strictly rationed and the people of Britain were in desperate need of more fats. They inquired the price and were told that it was equivalent to 7s 9d a pound and that they could buy unlimited quantities. They were unable to find out how it came to be on the market in Shanghai. Perhaps, Mr. Hayward stated, it was an answer that only Mr. Nash could give.
