BEST RETURNS FROM ENGLISH TOURS
CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 3. A proposal that the New Zealand Cricket Council consider an interehange of visits with the West* Indies, South Africa, Australia and India in prefer ence to having tours eonfined to Lng land, was defeated at the annual meet ing of the council this evening. The proposal was made by the Wellington Association. The chairman of the management committee, Mr. D. E. Wanklyn, said South Africa could be "written off" in the meantime. The experienee of the. Rugby Union. showed that su.ch tours could not be considered until the ship ping posifion iniproved. Th.e West Indies was a different proposition — a West Indies tour of New Zealand would be a suecess but a New Zealand tour oi the West Indies would be solely at. the expense of New Zealand. The grounds in the West. Indies were owned and controlled by clubs and such a tour would eost as much as a visit to England.' They did not know about condi tions in India and until conditions settled down it would not be wise. anu they might not be allowed to send a team. Mr. D. A. Colville said the English tours gave New Zealand teams far more cricket than tours of the West Indies, South Africa or India. The motion was lost on a show ot hands. Mr. Wanklyn announced that the tour by a team from Eiji was almost certain this season.
