In a thrilling 'finish Beau Gem, tlie South Australian colt, defeatea Chanak hy half a head in the Vic- - toria Derby at t,he V.R.C. spring meeting. After his win in the W- S. - Cox Plate at Moonee Valley last Saturday Chanak had been the popular ehoice and he started a fimi, favoiirite. Valiant Crown, who lod all the way to wili the A.J.C. Derby, attempted to repoat that performance today. He Jed tuiti! the straight entrance where Beau Gem and Chanak headed him. With a furlong to go Cluinak appeared the probable winner lnit Beau Gem fought back. With Munro and Badger riding desperately the eolts passed tlie post together and tho judge calJed for a photo finish. This showed that Beau Gem had a win by half a head. Conductor, last parly, mude up considefable ground to finish tliird, but he was five leugths away. Valiant Crown weakened to run fifth. Despite a 5lbs peualty, Money Moon madc aii exhibitiou of ihe field in the Cantala Stakes. Gathering speed very quickly lie was soon in front. At no stage *did he appear Jikelv to be over taken, and goiiig right away iu tlie straigh! he scored very oasily.
