633 SEATS LOST IN BOROUGH ELECTIONS

(N.Z.P.A.-

-Reuter

i • Covyriaht )

Received Sunday, 11.0 p.m". LONDON, November 2. The results of the municipal eleetions in England and Wales show a big- swing to the Right. With 376 results settled out of 388 early this morning the state of the parties was : — Conservatives gained 623 and lost 17. Labour gained 42 and lost 675. Liberals gained 46 and lost 46. Communists gained none and lost nine. Independents gained 170 and lost 134. Reuter says the swing to the Right in politics played a leading part and was almost as dramatic as the landslide which brought Labour in at the last gerieral election. The surprising feature was Labour's loss of control in the industrial areas such as Manchester, Birmingham, Reading, Rugby, Bury and Accrington in the provinces and Wembley, Woodgreen, Brentford and Chiswick among the London boroughs. The Observer says the Independents who markedly increased their numbers in the municipal eleetions include representatives of ratepayers' associations, citizens' groups and progressives and municipal groups. Many former Independents made open declarations of Conservative or Liberal support.
