UNFORTUNATE INCREASE IN MENTAL CASES

WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. In the House of Representatives, Mr. E. P. Adennan (New Plyinouth) expressed concern at the seemingly untortunate increase in menta] derangement. In 1905 there were 3112 cases but now I there were 8602. There had been an increase of 176 per cent. over the past 4u years whereas the population increase was only S6 per cent. The pereentage of recoveries was 45.9 for the 1905-09 period but only 29 per cent. for 1 942-35. Mr. Aderman said he lioped that more experieneed psychiatrists vvoukl be attracted to New Zealand and others trained- liere. Perhaps the building programme difliculty would be overcome more rapidly than the training of additional suitable staff in all phases of mental hospital work.
