OBITUARY
MRS. BRIDGET McGLONE One of the survivors of the wreck of the ship City of Auckland on Otaki Beach, on October .22, 1878, Mrs. Bridget McGlone, has died in Lower Hutt at the age of 86. Born in Emly, Ireland, Mrs. McGlone lived for more than 50 years in the Napier-Hastings distries. In 1888 she married Mr. Joseph McGlone, of Napier, and they celebrated their golden weddlng in 1938. Mr. McGlone died recently. There were four daughters and two sons of the marriage, but only two children survive her — the Rev. Father Vincent McGlone, P.P., Carterton, and Mrs. E. O'Neill, Lower Hutt. There are six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. As a girl of 17, Mrs. McGlone was a passenger in the City of Auckland, on her way out from Ireland to New Zealand. The ship went aground in darkness, but all the 240 passengers and the crew were saved, being helped ashore by the local Maoris. They were then taken to Waikanae in bullockwagons, and from Waikanae to Wellington in the Government steamer Hinemoa.
