GAOL FOR BOOKMAKERS NOW SEEMS UNWARRANTABLE
PALM. NTH., Oct. 30. Bruce John Ciarke was hned £150 in the Palmerston North Magistrate's Court this mornmg betore Mr. A. A. McLachlan, S.M., on a charge of bookmaking. The magistrate said accused had had previous convictions for the same olience, but as the last time was August, 1942, he could be treated almost as a statutory finst offender. Unfortunately a fact'br that was putting many old book-" makers back inoo harness was tne costly commission which recently 1 opent an unconscionable time going imo the matter. At that time the courts had determined to stamp out bookmaking by imposing short cerms of imprisonment, but now a prison sentence seemea unwarrantable.
