THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
Although- the bowling season has opened and the golf club will be closing within a few days, neither of these subjects ar,e the topic of conversation at the prestnt time. "When a group of men and women, too, are seen gathered in the street it is a ten to on'e bet that the municipal elections are under fire. The burning question seems to be who is standing. Rumour has it that the Mayoralty will be a clean .cut decision between two candidates. Others say that an organisation is meeting secretly — behind locked doors, with the shades drawn and the lamps tumed dim — far from prying eyes and Mears of the PresS. to discuss a last minute entry — a dark horse who may turn out to be a favourite. This will not be known until the nominations close. As for the council, there should be a number offering, both ratepayers and non-ratepayers, if what is rumoured is 'to be believed. Many members of the public do not favour the suggestion which came forward at a recent meeting of ratepayers to return the town to the care of the Horowhenua County Council. Whether candidates favour this plan will be one of the favourite questions asked them when they outline their policy before the public. Another subject which may decide the issue of the election is the ladies' rest room. This has been 'a thorn in the side of many residents lately, and the wise candidate will use it to advantage when planning his campaign. It is disappointing, however that present rumours do not include lady nominations for the council. This is unfortunate, but perhaps some.of the women's organisations can get together on the selection of at least one lady councillor. Whoever is standing or elected, they will always have to contend with, aRer a year or so a-nyway, with that most popular of all financiers, engineers and local body v specialists, the street-corner critic. -
