H. Oram in the House of Representative.-. tonight during the diseussion of the vote tor tlie Industries and Commerce Depart menl. Mr. Oram quoted the report of the department as saying that NeAv Zealand required annually uj) to 10,000 tons ot hemp and toAv and added that the output of the Foxton factorv was about 250,000 Avoolpacks Avhereas it had a capaeity for producing 1,000,00.0 eacli year. The difiiculty Avas the labour shortage and Avhat' could be said of a government which sought to encourage further industries in the country Avlule an industry which Avas of A'ital imjiortance to primarv iiroduction, was reduced to 25 per cent of its capaeity simplv because sufiicient Avorkers could not be found. There Avas a shortage of materials, shortage of labour and shortage of evervthing yet the Government invited the establisinuent of new industries at the expense of one manufacturing Avoolpacks so essential to Ihe economv of the whole countrv.
