FACTORY ACCOMMODATION
COUNCIL TO PRESENT LEVIN'S CLAIMS TO MINISTER It was all very interesting but there was simply no aceommodation in the town in which to house such an indUstry, said the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, when a letter was received at last night's council meeting ^from R. Hannah and Co., Ltd. The flrm was enquiring into the possibility of obtaining in Levin from 20 to 25 young v women to train as footwear machinists, and as to whether any premises w.ere available suitable for the setting up of such an establishment. There were a number of applications coming to hand from such firms, but there was not a vacant building in the town, added Mr. Burdekin. Following further discussion by the couneillors, in which the lack of buildings was deplored, it was agreed that steps should be taken to impress the Minister of Works of the necessity of having more factories built in the town. It was point.ed out that other towns were having large factories erected in their areas. It was decided that Hannah and Co.'s application, together with a resume of other applications received, should be forwarded to the Minister, and also that his attention be drawn to the fact that some residents were forced to seek employment outside the borough.
