It is stated that the investigation will be welcomed by anglers, as eels are an enemy of trout. In recent years i they have been- kept in check by I securing supplies for a canning factory at Bluff, which supplied a i big orden for canned eels received from Unrra. This canning has now ceased, and Southland anglers are afraid that one result will be a j marked increase in eels. United Nations Day United Nations Day — next Friday, October 24 — will not be specially observed by the United Nations Association and its afflliated bodies, as they celebrated on June 26 the anniversary ..of the signing of the charter. October 24, 1945, was the day the charter came ifito force with formal ratification by Russia and Poland, so it has almost as much historical association as Charter Day itself. Fifty nations signed the charter at San Francisco on June 26, 1945, 49 days after Germany's surrender. Altogether, the organisations include more than four-fifths of the world's inhabitants. Maori Pa as Reserves By deciding to-ask the New Plymouth High Schools' Board who owns the property on 'which one of the pas is situated and on what terms it would transfer the land to the scouncil, the New Plymouth Borough Council has carried a | scheme. to acquire and restore i three Maori pas near New Ply- j mouth. A feature of the new | reserve will be its glow-worm caves, and to preserve these the engineer was instructed that, as soon as the council acquires title to the area, gates be erected. The glow-worms are reported to be thick, and if protected will be a great attraction.
