BREVITIES FROM LAST NIGHT'S MEETING • The Levhar . Borough Council decided at a meeting last night that It would have no objectfon to-' the use, for building sheds, of used motor-ear eases, providing that the finished1 building was- approved. by the building inspec.tor. This decision was made on the recommendation of the works commitcee, following a request by the building inspector. ■K -fc The Horowhenua Pipe Band was granted permission to use the Levin" Park Domain on Sunday atf ternoons for practiee purposes, with4 .the proviso that the band keep off the ericket pitches. -K -K Permission was granted the Horowhenua Scottish Society and Highland Pipe Band for the use of the Levin Park Domain on February 14, 1948, for the purpose of holding the Wellington-Hawke's Bay provincial pipe bands championships, and with the right1 tomake a charge for admrssion of ls 6d for adults, 6d for children and a grandstand charge of ls and 6d respectively. * -K ¥ During the month of September the council issued 14 building permits of a value of £23,201 fbr new private dwellings, as compared with two permits of a value of £2693' in the same month last year. Thirtythree permits valued at £55,062 have been issued for new %dwelling3 since April 1, while for the same period of last year there were 40 permits of an aggregate value of £62,446. -K -K -K The following stock were killed at the Levin abattoirs during September, the comparative figures for last year being shown in parentheses-: Cattle 776 (693), sheep and lambs 5125 (3761), calves 3 (27), pigs, 369' (323) . Five cattle, 14 sheep, onelamb and two pigs were condemned. The fees for the month wdre £1096 as compared with £992 in September of last year. * -K * During September the r'en'cal section of the Levin Public Library showed a return of £30 5s, reported the librarian, Mrs. M. Whitaker. A total of 6206 books were issued, representing 5840 fiction and 366 non -fiction. In the junior section 387 books were issued. The National Library Service issued 609 books, comprising 249 fiction and 360 nonfiction. * * -K . Thirty-seven dwellings were in varicus stages of construction at the end of September, reported the building inspector, Mr. H. T. Ti'lyard. Inspections of all buildings had been carried out regularly.
* * * In reply to.^a request from the Levin branch of the Plunket Society, .it was decided that the usual donation of £10 be made to the organisation. -K -K -K A donation of £2 10s was made by the council to the Levin Giri Ouides towards their recent appeai for funds for the establishmsno in Marton of a Dominion training centre for girl guide leaders. The decision was made on the suggestion of Cr. F. D. Chainey during diseussions on the rental- of the Regent Hall for the Guides' recent fancy dress party. * * * In the infectious diseases section of the report' of the health and sanitary inspector, Mr. W. J. Guinan, to the council, five instances of diphtheria were recorded. Rnutine inspections had been made, he reported, of habitaiions, food sellers' premises and plumbing and drainage installalions. * * * The frontage of the Waiopehu Scenic Reserve had been cleared of bracken and the track repaired up to the punga .bridge, reported the borough overseer, Mr. E. Lycette*. The punga bridge had also been repaired, and it was hoped soon to have the track repaired right through the reserve. ' * * * The co-operation it had always received from the Horowhenua Pipe Band was the subject of comment at the meeting. The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, said that a apart from its valuable service during the war years, the band had, continued to work in with the council .and Municipal Band. It had turned out on Sunday and some of its members had led the parade of school children on the recent "Tin Day." He suggested that the band be advised of the council's appreciation of the "splendid" co-operation received. ■¥■ -K * Answering a deputation from the Horowhenua. Rugby Union, the council agreed to a reduction of .the rates on Rugby Park from £63 go £10. The council, said Mr. Burdekin, appreciated the good -work done in the district by the union, and the fact that it made the ground available Jree of charge to the summer spor-ts bodies. ■* -K • -K Appreciation of the results of the recent ftin day" was expressed by ihe Mayor. The -school children had^ responded marvellously, he said, and the public had also given the drive full support. He also referred to those in charge of the arrangements, namely Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Jenkins, Mrs. O. R. Lester, Messrs. Howard- Harvey, Senr., c. Sherwood, L. Bowden, W. A. J. . Hatch, the Levin Police, Traffic : Inspector M. Kehoe and the post- : master (Mr. L. A. Whitham) . Also ; Mr. W. L. Clark, who had made available his pubiic address system. The Mayor thanked Cr. F. E. Parker for deputisi-ng for him on the occasion. - 1
