TURAKINA DEVIATION TO BE OPENED DECEMBER 7
: WELLINGTON, Oct. 15. A definite assurance that, etha Turakina-Okoia railway deviation would be opened on Deeember 7, was given by the Minister of Railways, Hon. R. Semple, during the di'scussion on the departmental estimates in the House of Representatives tonight. The question was raised by Mr. E. B. K. Gordon ' (Rangitikei) who urged the' apeedy open'ing of tliis line. Mr Gordon said the • deviation would' ' greatly ' speed up the journey between Marton and Wanganui, would cut oux • fveral 'steep gradients and would usi , much les^ coal. The sooner trains were running the sooner people in the district' would^ be happy. Mr: Semple replied that the work on '• the notorious Pordell-Turakina tunne. constructiori, of whieh he was not very proud, was very nearly finished. The whole cost of the tunnel and deviation would be about £1,056,000, some cf whieh was expenditure whieh would never have oceurred if the tunnel had been built to specifications in the first place.
