MORE ABOUT THE PROPOSED SANATORIUM SITE

The Ikaroa Native Land Court is formulating a scheme of consolidation of the land interests of the| Taueki family on the northern j boundary of Kawiu Road. This ! information was contained in a letter from the registrar of the Native Land Court, Mr. C. N. Dudson, which was received at the i mpnthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council yesterday. The proposals' envisage the subdivision of the site into three farming areas and fourteen, building sites of two-fifths of an acre each, the division of the northern section into four separate sections for native housing sites and the ereation of a separate title for the Maori Cemetery. It was not. entirely clear, wrote Mr. Dudson, whether the Counties Act, 1946, applied to a scheme of consolidation, but if it did the Act would affect the creaf-ion of separate titles for the cemetery reserve and for each of the. proposed building sites off Kawiu Road. "Whether the Act applies of not, however, it is desired that any action should be taken wi'thin the spirit of the Act."

Mr. Dudson went on to explain that the Maoris -would be permitted .to sell the building sites if they so | desired. The cutting off of these ! sites would not affect the entrance ; to the f arms at the back. | Before any steps were taken to |have the sites surveyed, he. would [ be grateful if the council could 1 advise him if the proposals were acceptable. An engineer could be sent to Levin to discuss the matfer with the county and borough engineers, conpluded Mr. Dudson. Asking- for a committee to be formed to meet the officer of the department, the chairman, Mr. A. J. Gimblett, said that this action' might have far-reaching effects on ' the district. It was decided that the members for the Whirokino Riding, Crs. D. K. Guy, A. J. Gimblett and A. M. Colquhoun, should form the committee and discuss the matter. The land referred to in this article embodies the block selected by the Western Hospital Districts Joint Sanatorium Committee as the most suitable site for the prbposed sanatorium in Levin. •
