INCREASE IN BREAD PRICE LIKELY
WELLINGTON, Oct. 6. ' Housewives, already gnashing tbbir teeth over the price of meat and tea, will probably not weleome the news that balcers have applied for peimission to raise the price of bread. The president of the Auckland Master Bakers' Association (Mr. A. E. Brownlie) has stated that an increase is to be-.-expected within the next fortnight, apparently in antieipation of fhe application being siiccessfui. A conferenee in connection with the application, however, is to be held In Wellington this week, it was learned today. People with a knowledge of the trade are fairly sure that the increased price will be authorised. A member of a committee which administers an institution cafeter'ia has already warned his committee to expect either an increased price per loaf, or a smaller loaf, or both. ... The bakers' case is that they will find it impossible for bread manufacturers to continue witliout loss over the next 12 nionths, owing to recent cost increases.
