W i t • , / " ZANE GRAY'S FINE GAME IN CHAMPIONSHIPS Zane Gray became the 1947 champion by defeating J. Wlnterburn four and three in the final of the senior championship of the Otaki Golf Club, played on Sunday over 36 holes. Both men played excellent golf, but Gray's longer driving was the deciding factor, his figures for the 33 holes played being one under bogey, with Winterburn completing the 33 holes in four over bogey. - In the morning round Winterburn took the lea'd by winning the first hole with a bogey three, but Gray evened up by winning the 8th, and took the lead at the 9th with a birdie four. He increased his lead at the 10th, and made it four up by winning the 14th «and 15th in bogey figures. Winterburn recovered one hole at the 16th, but lost it again at the 17th, Gray dfoing a birdie three. Winterburn won the 18th, and the morning play finished with Gray three up. Gray completed this round in bogey figures of 72, Winterburn taking 76. The afternoon play commenced in a light drizzle, but it was not sufficient to affect the players. Gray drove through the green at the 19th, but recovered to halve the hole in threes. At the 283 yard 20th Gray's drive • finished inches from the edge of the green, and he obtained a birdie three. Winterburn was unlucky when his putt went in and out of the hole, taking a four and leaving Gray four up. Winterburn recovered a hole at. the 21st by sinking his putt for a birdie iour, and the 22nd was halved with birdie threes. Winterburn just missed a win at the 23rd, his putt missing^ and the hole being halved in fives. The 24th and 25th were halved in fours and Gray won the 3.36 yard 26th with a birdie three, Winterburn overrunning the hole with his putt. The 448 yard 27th was won by Gray after both men had played their seconds into the rough, Gray chipping out to within a few feet of the pin, and one putting to win with a birdie four. Winterburn reduced Gray's lead to four up by winning the 28th with 'a birdie two. The 29th- and 30th were halved in bogey figures, Gray at this stage being four up with six to play. Winterburn was short with his ! approach at the 31st, but redeemed himself with a great putt that stopped only inches from the hole, and halved in fours. Winterburn recovered a further hole at .the 32nd after driving into the rough and being short with his second, Gray three putting to lose the hole. Gray three up with four to play. The match ended on the 33rd green, Winterburn having pushed his drive to the right of the green and over-running the pin with his second. His putt over-ran the hole, and Gray, who had landed the green with his drive, won the hole and match with a bogey three. Gray, who is a young player, was heartily congratulated on his win, and responded in the usual manner. Results of other matches played during the weekend were: — Senior handicap semi-finals: J. B. D'Ath beat H. Derham, A. Harper .beat E. Gray. Intermediate handicap semi-finals: R. Blackburn beat F. Mayman, D. Harper beat W. Rzoska. Junior handicap semifinal: I. Bertram beat N. Willis. The finalists for the handicaps are: Senior: J. B. D'Ath , and A. Harper. Intermediate: R. Blackburn and D. Harper. Junior: G. Scarf and I. Bertram. The Captain v. Secretary match will be played on Saturday next, and the draw will take place at 1.15 p.m. sharp.
