PARCELS FOR BRITAIN

PUBLIC MEETING HELD There was a very poor response by the public of Shahiion and district to a public meeting called by the Mayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) in the. -council chambers last week. The object of the meeting was to discuss s'ome method by which money could be raised to assist the nation-wide "aid for Britain" campaign. Those present were Messrs. J. D. Campbell, F. O. Burtt, J. A. Roach, R. R. Lind, R. S. Downes, C. C. H. King and J. T. Bovis. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs. C. Tremewan and Mr. A. R. Mills. After the Mayor had outlined the reasons for calling the meeting, it was resolved on the motion of Mr. Campbell that a canvass of Shannon and district be made. Circulars .outlining the position will be sent to each householder, and the canvass will be made in the flrst week in November, which has been set a^ide as, Shannon's /Aid to Britain Week/' It was pointed out that private individuals and various organisations in the district ■were sending food parcels, which go a long way towards helping, but there were still many people who were not in contact with these organisations, but who would appreciate a lead in the matter. A committee was set up comprising Messrs. Lind, R. S. Downes, Campbell and Bovis to arrange canvassers. The aim of the appeal will be to raise £250, which will be sent to the Royal Society of St. George at Wellington for its aid to Britain fund. .■
