WELLINGTON, Oet. 5. After one of the Urlghtest games seen in Wellington this season North Island beat South Island 24 — 5 on Saturday. in the ' lirst lixture of its kind among the elite of ' footballers drawn from the railwavs service. Better opportunism was maiuly responsibie for North 's success. The eonditions were ideal and the crowd of about 4000 was a good one for the end of the season. The display of . Rugby was all the more creditable when it is considered that Rugby ainong railwaymen. tliroughout New Zealand was placed on an organised competitive basis for the lirst time this year. North owed much to the leadership of B. L. McOashin, the Horowhenua Hooker and captain; G. Brew, who has represented Manawatu, L. Miller, the speedy Wanganui centre three-quarter, and C. Ward, the Wellington wing three-quarter, while others in P. Tainati (halfbaek), M. Hihira (live-eighths), both of Wanganui, revealed plenty of talenjt. The South Island side was led by W. McHugh, the experienced Canterburv representative, and included in M. Wilson (centre), R. Bennett (half) and R. C. Woodham (back), players who have represented Canterbury; two Otago forwards in A. E. Hillyer and T. Wallaee and others who have appeared in interprovincial RugJ)y. Mott, Miller, Potter and Hihira scored tries for North. Clifford converted three and kielted two penalty goals. McNickel scored for -South, Gorton converting.
