Received Sunday, S.50 p.m. LAKE SUOCESS," Oet. E Mr. Jamesc Thorn .(New Zealand) told the Assembdy's Economie and Financial Committee yesterday that New Zealand in proportion to its population was the, greatest trading .nation 011 earth. He was discussing the report of the Social and Economie Couiicil and said that New Zealand was obviously very interested ' in anv . attempt to rehabilitate' the devastated areas and strengthen the econoniies oi undeveloped countries. New Zealand in 1946 exported goods worth neaidy £100,000,000 and iniported nearly £72,000,000 worth. This trade enabled New Zealand to maintain comparative ly high standards of living and she was most anxious to sustain and inerease it Some criticism of the progress of the Social and Eeononiic Council was justifted, but it would be a miracle if it had made 110 mistakes in view of tht great ditiiculties whicli confronted it from the beginning.
