Personal His Excellency the GovernorGeneral, who intended to be present at the Otaki races on Saturday, telegraphed his regret at being unable to attend. Mr. A. M. , Atkins, of Manakau, Will be present at the Hamilton show at the end of the month, officiating as a judge. Mr. Atkins has acted in this capacity for a, number of years. Mr. Tom Smith, who is an inmate of a hospital at Palmerston North, is in a very indifferent state of health, and* his condition is causing his relatives and friends considerable anxiety. Chinese Holiday In commemoration of the 36th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China, Chinese throughout New Zealand will observe a holiday on Friday. Value of Advertising A three-roomed dwelling advertised for removal in the last issue of "The Chronicle" resulted in nearly twenty making immediate enquirias.

Totalisator Figures Although there was a largeattendance* on the second day of the Otaki " races the totalisator figures showed a • decrease of £18,182. The day was gloriously fine and the track, considering the heavjrrain of the previous day, in good order. Police Hours The possibility of working a forty-hour week in the police force, and its effect on recruiting for the force, are subjects for discussion at the annual conference of the N.Z. Police Association, which will open in Wellington tomorrow. Constable W. A. Calwell, of Otaki, will represent the Palmerston North distriet. The conference will continue for three days. Otaki Races The organisation of the Otaki race meeting was well carried out, and much credit is due to the stewards for their fine work. Mr. N. Winiata had the able support of Messrs. J. M. Griffiths and T. Winiata. During the two days o the Otaki Band discoursed pleasing selections. All booths were most capably supervised, reflecting credit on those responsible.
