PROFESSIONAL ROAD CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIP

CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 6. In winning the Timaru to Christchurch 100-mile professional road'' cycling ehampionship yesterday, G. Stacli (Christchurch) established a new winning record of 4 hrs. 43 min. 9 sec. The previous fastest winning time was 5 hrs. 4 min. recorded by H. B. Chamberlain (Waimate) last year. In lilling. second place, the veteran rider (L. H. Arnst), whose time was 4 hrs. 45 min., rode the fastest raee of his eareer over the journey. He is 47 and. has has been in the game for 28 years. A. King, a West Coaster, illled third plaee. Probably the most spectacular performance was that of G. Wade (Auckland) who toolc the fastest time of 4 hrs. 24 min. 50 sec. He is the third rider to have brolcen 5 hrs. in taking the ehampionship and his time was just over 7 min. outside the record of 4 hrs. 17 min. established by D. A. Swanston in 1945. For the second year in succession, L. Hubbard toolc the junior eha'mpidnship. He rode olf 11 min. and the merit o± his effort is amply illustrated by the faet that his time was less than 4 min. outside that of Wade. Following are the plaeings: — G.
